The Changarnier family has lived in the village of Monthélie for centuries and founded the domaine in 1720. The estate is since 2004 run by Claude and Antoine Changarnier, helped by Fabrice Groussin who worked in Chassagne-Montrachet and believes in a modern viticulture centered around respect of the terroir. The 6ha of vineyards extend over the communes of Meursault, Monthélie, Auxey-Duresses and Pommard. Total production is around 30,000 bottles a year from 13 appellations.
Farming/vinification practices: certified organic, with a biodynamic approach. Organic products are added when necessary to help control the vigor of the vine. Using environmentally-friendly pest control methods means vineyards have to be checked daily. The soil is tilled to stimulate a healthy balance.
The grapes are hand-harvested in small crates and fermented using indigenous yeasts. Aging takes place over 10 to 13 months in barrels, with 10 to 25% new oak depending on the cuvées. The wines are then matured in stainless steels vats for 3 months before bottling. No fining, very light filtering. Very low levels of sulfites: under 30mg/l for the whites, and under 50mg/l for the reds.
