Grapes Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot

55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc. The vineyard spreads over 23 ha of deep gravel soil. The vines average 40 year old, with a density of 9,000 plants/ha and yields around 40 hl/ha. The overall production is conducted through plot selection. The grapes are hand harvested at full ripeness. As a first selection in the vineyard, only the healthy bunches are picked. In the cellar, the grapes are handled with meticulous care with two sorting tables. Traditional thermo-regulated concrete vats are used for maceration and fermentation. Time is provided to ensure a gentle extraction with daily tasting to find the optimum equilibrium. 50% of the production undertakes a malolactic fermentation in new barrels. The wine is then aged between 14 to 18 months in French oak barrels, 50% new oak, 50% one year old. 9,000 cases produced.
Deep ruby color. Intense nose with generous aromas of licorice and spice. Rich, dense, concentrated blackberry flavors with elegant tannins.

About the Producer

Château Clauzet is owned by Baron Maurice Velge. He first purchased a couple hectares of vineyards in Saint-Estèphe from Château de Côme, in 1997. He purchased a little later Château Clauzet and its 6 hectares, then gradually increased to the current 23 hectares. The vineyards are neighbors of Lafite and Cos d’Estournel and have very similar soils, deep gravel and gentle slopes thus providing good drainage. Winemaker José Bueno worked for 23 years at Baron Philippe de Rothschild with Château Clerc Milon and Château d’Armailhac. Château Clauzet only makes one wine.
