“Tru Miller, the lovely and gregarious owner of Adobe Guadalupe, is the Grande Dame of Baja’s wine region. Originally from the Netherlands, Tru spent much of her youth exploring the world. She has distilled that lifetime of travel into her casually elegant hacienda, Adobe Guadalupe.” Slowbaja.com

Adobe Guadalupe is located in the heart of the Baja’s tranquil Valle De Guadalupe, near the town of El Porvenir and about 40 minutes from the port of Ensenada. Tru and her husband, Donald Miller, bought the land in 1997, at a time when there were only 5 wineries in the region. Donald, a California-based banker, dreamed of making wine; Tru dreamed of having horses. They were looking to buy a property where they could fulfill both of their dreams. The sudden death of Tru’s son Arlo, who was fascinated by Mexico, and the discovery of an altar dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe during a visit to Notre-Dame de Paris guided them to the place they now call home. Their good friend Neil Haghighat, a Newport-based architect, designed and oversaw the winery’s construction.

Destiny played quite a role in their project as they managed to hire, against all odds, one of the best winemakers and one of the most respected agronomists to start their winery : Hugo d’Acosta, who was at the time the winemaker for Santo Tomas, and José Manuel Fernández, who to this day still works at Adobe. Him, Tru and Daniel Lonnberg – known for making some of the most exciting wines in Mexico, and the full-time winemaker at Adobe since 2012 – usually meet every other day to discuss the wines. In homage to Tru’s son, the first bottlings were named after the archangels: Uriel, Miguel, Kerubiel, Serafiel, Gabriel, Rafael.

Bordered by groves of olive trees and pomegranate bushes, the vineyards spread over 24 hectares and the total production is around 9,000 cases.
