Vintage Note: the 2022 vintage began with cold mornings and warm afternoons, a trend that lasted through April. Ideal summer temperatures continued, with morning fog and persistent afternoon breezes from the Pacific Ocean. This steady weather resulted in a long, moderate growing season, which allowed the grapes to develop slowly and gradually, with small berries and clusters. A September heatwave provoked a fast and short harvest with long hours in the winery processing a deluge of beautiful fruit. The resulting crop yielded fruit with bright acidity and minerality, beautiful aromas and complexity. A spectacular and “classic” Sta. Rita Hills vintage, 2022 reminded Alma Rosa’s Founders Richard and Thekla Stanford of 1971, the year they first planted Pinot Noir in the Sta. Rita Hills.

Winemaking

  • Settled for 24 hours in stainless steel tanks and then racked into barrels
  • Small inoculation for primary fermentation
  • Primary fermentation lasted until March
  • Bâtonnage was weekly until February
  • Malolactic fermentation occurred naturally and lasted until April
  • Wine was aged on gross lees for 10 months in 27% new French oak
  • Bottled slightly polished in August

Tasting Notes: In the glass, the 2022 Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay displays a delicate golden hue. The nose welcomes with pleasing hints of citrus blossoms, freshly squeezed lemon and honeydew melon. On the palate, vivid, mouthwatering acidity takes center stage, accompanied by a subtle salinity that persists through to a smooth and lingering finish. The wine’s oceanic minerality and bright, citrusy acidity are hallmarks of Chardonnay grown at Alma Rosa’s estate El Jabali Vineyard.

Lovely nectarine and white flower aromas are cleanly presented on the nose of this bottling. The palate is tightly wound at first and then opens into flavors of orange oil and lemon blossom before clinging back to that leathery structure. — Matt Kettmann

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Alma Rosa Winery & Vineyards

Alma Rosa Winery & Vineyards was founded in 2005 by Richard Sanford, who made the audacious decision to plant Pinot Noir in what is now the Sta. Rita Hills AVA in 1971. After selling Sanford Winery in 2002, Sanford founded Alma Rosa, centered around his El Jabali estate, which he planted in 1983. An early proponant of organic viticulture, Sanford farmed the El Jabali vineyard organically, a philosophy that continues at Alma Rosa.

Sanford sold the winery to Bob & Barb Zorich in 2014, but stayed on as winemaker and still lives on the propery. The Zorichs are commiteed to carying on Sanford’s vision, and over the years have planted and aquired additional vineyard blocks.

Winemaker Samra Morris took the reigns from Sanford after his retirement in 2020. Born and raised in war-torn Bosnia, Morris says that she still pinches herself every day that she gets to make wine in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Prior to joining Alma Rosa, Samra’s worked three harvests with one of Napa’s most respected consulting winemakers, Thomas Rivers Brown. Through this experience she came to appreciate site-specific farming, high-touch viticulture and thoughtful cellar management. Samra holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in food sciences from The University of Sarajevo. Samra is assisted in the cellar by consulting winemaker Tony Biagi (Duckhorn, PlumpJack, CADE, Sinegal Estate, Hourglass, and To-Kalon Vineyard Co., and Patria)

“At 80 years old, Richard Sanford – one of the founders of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, planting some of its first Pinot Noir vines back in 1971 – beams when he’s thinking of Samra Morris, the winemaker chosen to lead Alma Rosa, a winery he founded in 2005.” – Clive Pursehouse, Decanter, May 16 2024, US West Coast: The New Vanguard
