|Steinschaden is a family-run winery in the Kamp Valley, north of the Danube. The Kamp Valley derives its name from the Kamp, a small river meandering its way through beautiful landscapes. With 4,000 ha of vineyards the Kamp Valley is one of the biggest wine producing areas of Austria. It boasts three different types of soil and is blessed with an optimal climate for vineyards. This leads to wines of great finesse and diversity.
The family tree is deeply rooted in the soil of the Kamp Valley and can be traced back to the 16th century. Steinschaden’s cellar boasts the oldest basket press in the German-speaking part of Europe (dating back to 1564 A.D.), and the biggest refillable wooden barrel in Austria and Germany (with an empty weight of 10 tons and holding up to 40,400 litres).|
|Gruner Veltliner - Selektion (Bag in Box and KEG)|
|100% Gruner Veltliner from the Kamptal (but because of the DAC - Districtus Austriae Controllatus law, it is not allowed to quote any Bag-in-Box as a Kamptal wine).|
The Selektion comes from different vineyards, all with different soils (granite, gneiss, schist and loess). The blend of vineyards differs from year to year. The date of the harvest can vary from the middle of September to the middle of October. Fermented at low temperature in stainless steel tanks. Alcohol: 12.5% - Residual Sugar: 2.5 g/l
|Gruner Veltliner "Gigant" - Kamptal DAC Reserve|
|The Gigant comes from a single vineyard planted in the early 50’s and called Riede ("vineyard") Stein ("stone"). The soil has just a thin layer of loess with danube gravel on top. The harvest usually starts at the end of October, until the middle of November. The grapes have a long time to develop their aromas. The bunches are pressed whole then fermented in large casks with the natural yeasts from the vineyard. After fermentation the wine rests “sur lie” to develop aromatic and flavor complexity.|
An expressive nose of fresh fruits and delicate flowers, pineapple, apples and some peppery spice. A powerful Gruner Veltliner with a creamy finish, and lots of minerality and spice.
