HISTORY OF WINERY

Chateau Claud la Chapelle was created in 1964 by the current owners’ father, Mr Burriel – and has remained a family oriented property. All the grapes used for the wines are estate grown.

Size of vineyards: 8 hectares (20 acres)

Production volume: 2500 cases

VITICULTURE

Sustainable farming

Soil consists of clay over limestone – producing rich and balanced grapes – balanced acidity from the clay & long growing season (thanks to the moisture stored in the limestone).

They use a high trellising system which is a variant of Vertical Shoot Positioning. Theirs has a greater canopy with more foliage for optimal maturity & phenolic richness (which gives roundness to the wine).

Yield – around 45 hl/ha

South-west facing vineyards

Property planted: 95% merlot & 5% Cabernet Sauvignon – 5000 vines/hectare, relatively dense planting

WINEMAKING

All grape bunches are destemmed

Short pre-fermentation maceration – warm alcoholic fermentation at 27/28°C for about 3 to 4weeks.

Fermentation takes place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks (50/100/150 hectoliters)

3 pumps- overs are done per day during the fermentation period

Blending is done just before bottling – generally in May.

ELEVAGE

Ageing in 85% stainless steel tanks & 15% barrels – for a period of 12-18 months

The barrels are 1/3 new, 1/3 one year old & 1/3 two years old.

BOTTLING

No fining

Minimal filtering at bottling

Aromas

Claud la Chapelle, offers a nose of bright fresh red fruits – black cherries, raspberries, blackberries and notes of cooked/jammy strawberries. Under tones of vanilla with hints of cacao. There is an alluring note of roasted coffee.

Flavours

Big round mouth feel, explosive bouquet of ripe cherries, long lush fine grained tannins that coats the mouth – with a rich end of palette. The flavours are long lasting and the soft acidity carries and holds the freshness of the fruit in the mouth.

Colour

It exhibits a deep garnet colour. Dark red with slightly pink hues on the edge – the wine is bright and shows a crystal purity.

Drinking recommendations

Generous and opulent. It is delicious with beef and cheese, but will work well with various foods (stewed dish, BBQ, pizza…). This is the typical “pleasure wine”, it can be opened on any occasion and it will be appreciated by all wine lovers.
