Bodegas Ramon de Ayala, of Vina Santurnia fame, is a 4th generation family owned winery located in the town of Briñas in Rioja Alta. The Bodegas vineyards are divided between a 70 year old vineyard in Rioja and a 18 year old vineyard located in Alavesa. Today the Bodega is run by two brothers, Gonzalo (in charge of the vineyards) and Ramon (the winemaker). The name Deobriga (Divine Bridge) comes from Deo meaning God and Briga which means Bridge or Fortress. It is the name of a Roman town which, according to the historian Govantes (1846), was built on the route followed by Anthony Augustus from Astorga to Aquitaine; today, the town is known as Brinas. |

| 80% Tempranillo, 20% Graciano The Deobriga Rioja was inaugurated as the ultimate expression of their vineyards potential. The grapes come from two estate vineyards: the Santurnia vineyard, planted in 1937, for the Tempranillo and part of the Graciano, and the Vigortilla vineyard, planted in 1990 for the remaining Graciano. The harvest for the 2004 Rioja took place the last week of October. 80% of the grapes were destemmed before maceration. The very long fermentation, 4 weeks with daily pump-overs, yields a wine that is well-structured, intensely colored with profound fruit and complexity of flavors. Aged for 8 months in French (80%) and American (20%) oak barrels. In the nose, it comes across with hints of plum and cedar box. It has a concentrated body following through with the plum and lots of spice. "Dark ruby-colored, it offers up aromas of cedar, lots of spice, red currant, and blackberry. Supple-textured, ripe, and balanced, this medium-bodied wine has ample sweet red and black fruit and a pure finish. Drink it over the next 8 years.” -Robert Parker 90 Points, Wine Advocate # 175 Feb 2008 1001 cases produced |
