Costers del Segre - which means 'the banks of the River Segre', a tributary of the Ebro - was created less than twenty years ago but produces some of the most dynamic wines in Spain today. Today this DO produces a series of wines with great personal character, some of them considered among the most unusual in Spain, their styles based on intelligent blending of local grapes with recently planted French varieties.

The vineyards are situated in Lleida province, in inland southern Catalonia. They are broken down into six smaller subzones, running in an arc in the foothills of the mountains east of Lleida, where they meet the vineyards of Conca de Barberà. Although the vineyards are geographically scattered, they generally share sandy topsoils over limestone, with low organic content. Altitudes vary from 250-700 metres.

This cellar in a new winery incorporated in March 2003. Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo), Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Macabeu, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Parellada and Verdejo are the varieties that were planted. All of them nested in a continental climate, planted on poor soil with little organic components, almost arid, producing grapes that are small in size but with a huge flavor. They own about 50 hectares and a recently built cellar situated in the village of Verdú, the province of Lleida and within Costers del Segre DO.

Costers del Segre
Produced from Tempranillo (90%) and Merlot (10%). The crushed grapes undergo a long, 25 day fermentation at cool temperatures, around 80 degrees, in order to get a gentle extraction and to preserve the multitude of aromas. The wine passes into new French barrels for just 3 months to complete the malolactic fermentation and balance the wine. The wine is then moved to stainless steel cuves to finish its ageing.

Attractive dark cherry color. Exquisite aromas of wild berries and spices over a rich background of leather and liquorice. Velvety and elegant palate. Delicious with meat, stews, casseroles and creamy cheeses.
