Scagliola > Piemonte > Italy
The Scagliola estate is located on a hill at San Siro in the town of Calosso. The estate is run by the brothers Maggiorino and Mario Scagliola and was started by their grandfather in 1945.

Mario is in charge of the winery. The previous generations were just growers selling their wines in bulk. From 1980 onwards, the Scagliola brothers started investing in facilities to bottle Moscato wines and subsequently added rotofermenters for red wines. The facilities are state of the art and new buildings and machinery are added continuously to allow for growth.

Maggiorino is in charge of the vineyards. Treatments against threats to the health of the grapes are based on the particular conditions in each of the fields and the meteorological conditions at the time and are reduced to the necessary minimum. Fertilization is based on replenishment only and within the maxima of the regulations. The winery currently cultivates 33 acres of barbera, brachetto, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, dolcetto, merlot and moscato grapes.

Recognized regularly by Gambero Rosso, Wine Spectator and Parker, Scagliola is truly a hidden gem in the heart of Piedmont.
Barbera Mati
Is "Mati" the dog or the little girl? Short for Mathilde, it is frequently used as a name for either in Piedmont. Like either "Mati", this barbera is young and energetic. Made in stainless steel with a small percentage of the Frem (aged in large Slavonian oak barrels), its fresh fruits and zestiness match well to everyday foods and snacks.

Barbera d'Asti "Frem"
Gambero Rosso: due bicchiere. “Il cane frem” means the dog is pointing. This Barbera is “Frem”, well focused, energetic.

The vines range between 10-25 years of age and the wine is aged in large Slovenian Oak barrels.

With aromas of wild currants and blackberry, this red has the ideal amount of acidity and depth, giving it the ability to pair with grilled meats or heavy cheeses as well as lighter tomato dishes and fish.

Medium body, high acid and bright fruit coupled with soft tannins.

Dolcetto "Da Sempre"
100% Dolcetto

Alcohol – 13%

Fermented and aged in stainless steel.

Da Sempre mean “as always”. The picture is that of the winery’s founder, the Scagliola’s grandfather riding his bicycle to market. Something that for generations occurred “da sempre”. Mario strives to make this wine “as” it was “always” produced by his predecessor.

Age of vines: 20 – 25 years

Altitude – 1310 ft

Exposure – SE

Vines/acre – 1700

Training of vines – single Guyot pruned to 6-7 buds

Acres – 3.7

Yield/acre - 4110 gallons

Soil – Calcareous/clay

Harvest – Hand selected/end of September

Production – 10,000 bottles

Green Pruning – Grapes are thinned to a single cluster per loop as soon as the fruit is formed and is continued until the vine stops producing. Leaves are thinned around the bunches to prevent mildew attacks. The highest branches are guided along the highest wire.

Vinification – 10 days of traditional fermentation using only naturally occurring yeasts. 9 days maceration on lees at controlled temps of 70-75 degrees. Malolactic fermentation without inoculating bacteria.

Moscato "Primo Bacio"
100% Moscato Bianco di Canelli DOCG

With its intoxicating aroma and its mouth-filling sweet fruit flavors, this Moscato gives you a similar sensation as that of your first kiss, a kiss one never forgets, says wine-maker Maggiorino Scagliola

Moscato d'Asti "Volo di Farfalle"
“Flight of the Butterflies” a vineyard selection of the ripest grapes.

Straw with golden reflections.

Muscat with a strong and original personality; aroma of mountain flowers, sage and rosemary.

Pleasant sparkling wine, sweet but not cloying.

Brachetto
100% Brachetto, a grape that produces a truly distinctive red wine that is a treasure to behold but seldom seen outside of Italy.

Brachetto is grown in the hills of the DOCG Acqui in the Piemonte region in northwestern Italy. The one used for this wine comes from a one-hectare vineyard near the town of Calosso in the neighbourhood of Asti.

Low in alcohol (around 6%) and slightly frizzante (sparkling), Brachetto is famous for its light and elegant body and heavily perfumed foam (strawberries, cherries and raspberries).

Production is low, only 330 cases per year, so this highly sought after dessert wine is hard to find.

Delicately sweet but not sticky, this is a particularly good match with soft cheeses.

Brachetto is also known as the Braquet grape of southern France where together with Cinsault it makes very nice rosés around the city of Nice on the Cote d'Azur.
