Though this may not sound like much to the average American wine drinker, Ernst Triebaumer is known throughout Austria as the producer of the most concentrated and structured Blaufränkisch. This little known varietal is one of the big three red grapes, along with St. Laurent and Zweigelt in Austria. The wine press refers to him by his initials, E.T., and after two decades of this he actually seems to like it. Triebaumer’s Blaufränkisch is always intense and focused, and tends toward structure and power. These are wines to savor with game or rich cheeses, and almost have to be the last red wines served. In a world where more simple, fruity and easy drinking wines dominate, Ernst Triebaumer does not feel as though he’s missing out one bit!
