BURGENLAND

Top vineyard sites have history. 1569 the site Steinzeiler, in the year 1570 Tatschler, Gloria, Dürr and others have first been mentioned. The best wines in the Kollwentz estate are growing in this vineyard sites.

The single vineyards extend from 170m above sea level at the slope foot of the Leithagebirge as far as to ried Gloria, which is the highest vineyard site of northern Burgenland, being located 325m above sea level.

Red varieties are primarily planted from 170m to 200m above sea level, while Chardonnay's realm starts above 200m. The altitude and the influence by the woods that cover the highest elevations of the Leithagebirge give rise to a cool microclimate. On those sites, the grapes will slowly mature to full ripeness, which is reflected in their refined aromas and the intensive taste.

The sites that are located in the center of the slopes and on the foot of the slopes will catch every sunbeam from early morning till late at night. The soils are heavy and, depending on the soil type, are ideal for growing Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt and Cabernet Sauvignon as well as Welschriesling.

All grapes from the vineyards are picked by hand. This implies rigorous selection directly on the vine – only fully ripe, unscathed fruit ends up in the cellar.

Anton Kollwentz was the first to cultivate Cabernet Sauvignon in Austria, triggering a real Cabernet boom by his successes. Being an extremely powerful Burgenland-style wine, their Cabernet has captivated wine lovers for more than 20 years.

Sauvignon Blanc - Steinmuhle
100% Sauvignon Blanc. 50% in stainless steel, 50% in old Barriques

Sauvignon Blanc is an old Burgenland variety. In the vineyard, it is the most difficult grape variety altogether. It makes special demands on its location. It grows perfectly on meager flintstone or silex soils. Such a soil is found in Ried Steinmühle, giving expressive wines with some delicately pungent fruit brought about by the interplay with the Pannonian climate prevailing in Burgenland. This Sauvignon Blanc is being reproduced only by a handful of our own vines in order to secure its high quality in an unadultered form. The aroma spectrum of this Sauvignon reaches from green peppers to elder flowers to maracuja fruits. It harmonizes perfectly with fish, asparagus and light meat.

Zweigelt Follikberg
The Zweigelt grape is a crossing between Blaufränkisch and St.Laurent. It was bred in 1922 by a Dr. Zweigelt, after whom it was named. On account of its high quality, Zweigelt was the only new variety accepted in the Austrian vine scene. Its elegant character and delicate sour-cherry flavors make it an enjoyable drink already one year after harvest. It is the perfect match for grills, pork and lamb.

Eichkogel
Eichkogel is a blend of Grosshöflein's traditional varieties Blaufränkisch (50%) and Zweigelt (50%).

Influenced by Burgenland's Pannonian climate, the grapes ripen to full maturity on the southerly slopes of the Leithagebirge. Aged in small oak barrels, Eichkogel unites the spicy berry fruit of Blaufränkisch with the velvetiness of Zweigelt. Eichkogel matches excellently with hearty meat dishes such as lamb and steak.

Cabernet Sauvignon
100% Cabernet. The wines has matured in new Barriques from Taransaud and Vicard

In the Pannonian climate of Burgenland, the grape ripens to excellent quality. At a yield of just under 30 hectoliters per hectare, an elegant wine rich in extracts is produced, which is aged in small oak barrels. This Cabernet develops a striking cassis nose with a delicate vanilla fragrance, reaching its optimum drinkability after five to seven years. Cabernet Sauvignon works beautifully with game, beef and cheese.

Steinzeiler
Steinzeiler derives its name from the rocky, calcareous soils on the southerly slopes of the Leithagebirge. Here, vines have been grown for 2800 years. Steinzeiler - a blend of Blaufränkisch (60-80%), Cabernet Sauvignon and Zweigelt - is a powerful red made from carefully tended old vines and displaying a lot of elegance and charm. It marries perfectly with game, dark meat and cheese.
