COTE CHALONNAISE - MERCUREY
Paul du Couedic is the sixth generation to produce wines at this estate tucked away in the rolling hills of Mercurey. The appellation of Mercurey is considered at the top of the wines coming from the Cote Chalonnaise, the region of Burgundy just below the Cote d'Or. The principal wine produced in Mercurey is a sturdy, if rustic, red and in fact red wine is the most important wine (in quantity) produced by du Couedic. White Mercurey is a bit of a rarity and du Couedic has a particular piece of terroir ideally suited to white wine production, if only a small quantity. On his property there is an outcropping of marl, which is ideal for fine white Burgundies. This limestone rich soil produces a wine which has a lovely floral quality to the bouquet, with concentrated, white-peach fruit and a mineral finish. This wine is produced in stainless steel so there is no heavy oakiness to mask the beautiful, refined Chardonnay fruit. This wine is ideal with oysters and smoked salmon as well as all preparations where a fine, un-oaked white wine is called for.
